For the first time in North Berwick

Day trip to North Berwick from Edinburgh.

If you visit the city of Edinburgh for a weekend trip or as part of your journey through Scotland and you have an extra day to spare, I would recommend visiting North Berwick. It is only half an hour train ride from Edinburgh Waverley Station and when you travel in the weekend, the return ticket is approximately £7.20 pounds. If you want to plan this journey, use the app or website Trainline Edinburgh Waverley Station to North Berwick. It is perfect for planning your trip! However, instead of the train, it is also possible to take a car or the bus to North Berwick, but the bus takes more than two hours. A train ride is more comfortable and provides you with more time to explore the town as well as its surroundings.

When you arrive at the train station in North Berwick, it is less than 15 minutes’ walk to the beach. The beach stretches far and offers a great view on the Bass Rock where the world’s largest northern gannet colony is based. In addition, it offers amazing views on the Firth of Forth on a clear day. When you keep on walking at the beach till you reached the town, you will come across the Scottish Seabird Centre. You can learn more about local wildlife and find out more: Scottish Seabird Centre.

If you walk past the Seabird Centre, there is a small walk on a path with rocks that provides you with great views at Bass Rock and the beach. If you are lucky, it is a perfect stop to have lunch at the seaside with seafood bites from the local Lobster Shack when they are open (check opening times, depends on season). The town itself has lots of little shops to explore and buy yourself some treats or gifts for a friend of the family. If you enjoy visiting castles, there is the beautiful Tantallon Castle surrounded by cliffs (roughly 4-kilometer walk, quicker option is the bus). Another option is the Dirleton Castle that is situated more to the west. When continuing the walk to the cliffs at the end of the beach is on top of the cliffs the green golf course. It is worth the little hike up to have a different view of the town in contrast with the green golf fields on the other side.

Another activity that requires more energy is the North Berwick Law Formation with a height of 187 meters. This volcanic rock was formed in the Carboniferous era and the 18 hut circles can still be seen. It proves that local people have lived and farmed on volcanic rock. At the highest point of the volcanic rock stands a pair of whale’s jaw bone at the summit of the Law. In 1709, it was put on the top of the Law but it has recently been replaced with a replica due to the safety of the historical Whalebone. The volcanic rock offers amazing views over North Berwick and its nearby surroundings.

I hope you have time to visit North Berwick and experience an amazing day!
